Body pillow for side sleepers

A body pillow for side sleepers: hug pillow and knee pillow in one

Side sleepers often want three things at once: something between the knees, something to hold, and something at the back. The Mewvale Moon is one 59 inch crescent that covers all three.

Should side sleepers use a body pillow?

If you sleep on your side and already hug a pillow or tuck one between your knees, yes. A body pillow puts both jobs in one place, so there is no pile to rebuild every night. If one pillow under your head already feels perfect, you may not need one.

What to look for

  • Length: long enough to reach from your arms to your knees. The Mewvale Moon is 59 inches tip to tip, sized for people under 6 feet for the best full-body fit.
  • Fill that holds up: it should not collapse between your knees. Ours is vegan down you can add to or take out.
  • Support behind you: a crescent curves, so you can lean back into it. A straight pillow only sits in front of you.
  • A washable cover: the Mewvale Moon cover zips off and machine washes cold.

Why a crescent shape

A straight body pillow lives in front of you. A crescent bends, so one pillow can reach your arms, your knees and your back, whichever way you face.

  • Facing it: arm over the top curve, knee over the bottom tip.
  • Back to it: lie inside the curve and let it hold your back, with the bottom tip between your knees.

Four pillows, or one

One to hug, one for the knees, one behind you, one under your head. Or one crescent that stays with you when you turn over, plus your usual head pillow.

Crescent or straight: an honest comparison

  • Between your knees: both work.
  • Something to hug: both work.
  • Support at your back: the crescent does; a straight pillow does not.
  • Turning over: with a crescent you roll inside the curve and it ends up behind you; a straight pillow has to be pulled across.
  • Adjustable fill: the Mewvale Moon zips open; many straight pillows do not.
  • Size and price: a straight pillow is usually smaller, lighter and cheaper. The Mewvale Moon is about 13 lb and takes up a real share of the bed.

Side sleeper questions

How do I use it?

Lie on your side facing it, hug the top and bring the bottom between your knees. Keep your usual pillow under your head. When you turn over, roll inside the curve and the pillow ends up behind you.

Which shape is best for side sleepers?

It depends what you want held. Straight pillows are the smallest and only sit in front. U-shaped pillows surround you and take the most room. A crescent sits between the two: hug the top, tuck the bottom between your knees, and lean back into the curve.

Does it replace a knee pillow?

That is what the bottom tip is for, while your arms hold the top.

Is it too big for a shared bed?

It is big: 59 inches long, 24 inches at its widest and about 13 lb. On a smaller or shared bed it can feel crowded, so measure your space first.

Will it go flat?

It arrives extra full and relaxes over the first few nights. After that you can add or remove fill any time, and the Perfect Hug Promise covers your first top-up in year one.

How do I wash it?

Zip the cover closed, wash cold, no bleach, dry on low. See Cover care.
